At ShanghaiTech, both undergraduate and graduate students can actively embrace global academic resources through various programs, including coursework abroad, participation in international conferences and competitions, and visiting scholar or research programs.

There are basically three types of study abroad programs for undergraduate students:

1. “3+1” Exchange Program

2. Summer Course Program

3. Overseas Research Program

The “3+1” Exchange Program is designed for junior and senior students across all schools and institutes. Participants have the opportunity to study at partner institutions globally for one semester or a full academic year. The program allows students to freely select credit-bearing courses and laboratory research opportunities while enjoying an immersive campus life alongside local peers. This program partners with dozens of world-leading universities, offering more than 20 exchange opportunities annually and enabling over 25% of eligible students to participate.

The Summer Course Program offers another valuable opportunity for undergraduate students to study abroad. Participants enroll in courses offered by partner institutions, experiencing an intensive immersion in overseas undergraduate life over a short period. ShanghaiTech grants credit recognition for students attending summer courses at partner institutions and also encourages capable students to independently apply for summer programs at other universities abroad.

ShanghaiTech University maintains a formal summer research program with Osaka University and strongly encourages capable undergraduates to apply for research opportunities at other top-tier institutions worldwide, particularly during the summer period, with funding provided to outstanding students.
