Professor Hartmut Michel, Director of Max Planck Institute of Biophysics and Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (1988) visited ShanghaiTech University on September 14th at the invitation of Founding Director and Professor Raymond Stevens and Vice Director and Professor Liu Zhijie of iHuman Institute at ShanghaiTech University. During his visit he delivered the second lecture of ShanghaiTech’s lecture series. ShanghaiTech Associate Provost Dr. Jiang Ge awarded Professor Michel the Certificate of Appreciation.
Professor Michel presented a comprehensive analysis of the mechanism and energy conversion in the key steps in plant photosynthesis. After a detailed assessment of energy input in biofuel production, he pointed out the limitation of relying on biofuels to meet global energy needs, and discussed alternative options for future energy supply. In addition to his lecture, Professor Michel also visited the PI labs at iHuman Institute, SIAIS and SLST and met ShanghaiTech graduate students.
Hartmut Michel is a distinguished professor of Biochemistry and director of the Molecular Membrane Biology department at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics, Germany. His research is on structure, function and mechanism of action of membrane proteins. He received the Nobel Prize in chemistry jointly with Johann Deisenhofer and Robert Huber in 1988.
The ShanghaiTech lecture series features lectures by renowned figures in the fields of academia, industry and politics. Preceding Professor Michel, the lecture series hosted Dr. Yi Gang, Deputy Governor of People’s Bank of China.
