Brookings Delegation Visits ShanghaiTech

On March 24th, a delegation fromBrookings Institution, headed by Board Co-chair John L. Thornton, visitedShanghaiTech University. Brookings Executive Vice President Martin Indyk, VicePresident and Director of Foreign Policy Bruce Jones, Director and John L.Thornton China Center Senior Fellow Li Cheng, as well as other delegates,attended the meeting. ShanghaiTech President Jiang Mianheng extended a warm welcome to the delegation.


President Jiang introduced the university’svision and progress with a focus on innovative education and management. VicePresident Gong Jinkang made a brief introduction to admission and academicofferings. Brookings delegates affirmed the developments achieved byShanghaiTech in such a short time and showed interest in universityadministration, schools and residential colleges, and international developments.Both sides exchanged ideas on student training and cooperation between academiaand industry.


Founded in 1927, Brookings Institution is aprivate, nonprofit organization devoted to independent research and innovativepolicy solutions. It is generally considered one of themost influential policy institutes in the U.S. Prior to Brookings, John L.Thornton served as President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of Goldman Sachsand he has served as Professor and Director of Tsinghua University’s GlobalLeadership Program since 2003.
