报告人简介:
George A. Sawatzky is Professor of Physics and Chemistry University of British Columbia. He has been awarded NWO-Spinoza award in 1996, and Nieuwsblad van het Noorden prize 1997. He recieved Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2002.
His research interests involve the fabrication as well as the theoretical and spectroscopic study of novel complex systems and nanostructured materials. The research goal is to develop new approaches in the quantum theory of solids, and define new pathways for the fabrication of materials and structures with innovative physical properties.
讲座摘要:
We start with a brief introduction of strong electron correlation effects in 3d transition metal compounds including the Nickelates and Cuprates with concepts like the Mott Hubbard insulators and Charge transfer insulators. The influence of electron phonon coupling including models involving “molecule” forming solids. I introduce the concepts of “coefficients of fractional parentage/ spectral weights/ self energies” and their influence on spectroscopies such as photo electron spectroscopy (ARPES) and on the low energy scale band structure of solids. I will use examples like H2 molecule, La2CuO4, NiO, SmB6, LaCoO3, NdNiO3, and the more recently studied La3Ni2O7 if time permits.
