Flexible Implantable Optogenetic Devices for Multibrain Network Modulation and Perception Delivery

Establishment of optogenetic protocols combined with high-resolution light delivery tools enable researchers to selectively modulate the activities of targeted neurons population. However, the device-level integrations of light delivery interfaces in the context of free-behaving animal experiments remain challenging. I will report the development of a device platform that combines flexible neural interfaces that engage the biological organism with uLED-induced optogenetic stimulations and a battery-free wireless dynamically programmable system that provides real-time control of stimulation parameters. Application of these devices, for the first time, realizes coordinative control on brain activities and achieve active dynamic control of social interaction tendencies. Meanwhile, these devices can generate artificial perceptions through spatio temporally orchestrated transcranial optogenetic stimulations among selected cortical regions of the brain in behavior studies to investigate how distributed synthetic cortical activities are perceived.
