Professor Shen Dinggang from the School of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at ShanghaiTech University received the MICCAI Enduring Impact Award (EIA) at the 2025 International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI), becoming the first Chinese scholar to win this honor since the award was established 17 years ago.

The MICCAI Society is the premier comprehensive academic organization in the fields of Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention. Its annual conference serves as a global benchmark for medical imaging research, with internationally recognized academic prestige and influence.

The EIA was established in 2009 and is awarded to only one scholar each year, representing the highest honor in the field of medical imaging AI. The award not only requires exceptional achievements in five key areas—academic originality, clinical applicability, research impact, industry contributions, and talent cultivation—but also emphasizes the lasting and profound changes the scholar has brought to the field. This award is not only the ultimate affirmation of a scientist’s academic status and contributions but also a tribute to their lifelong dedication and passion.

Professor Shen’s receipt of this award is not only a high recognition of his personal academic career and industry contributions but also a historic breakthrough for Chinese scholars in this top international field.

Under Professor Shen’s promotion, over the past two decades, the proportion of papers by Chinese scholars at MICCAI has surged from an early 2%–3% to the current 48.7%, an increase of more than 20 times, topping the global rankings—far surpassing the second-place United States (11.5%) and third-place Germany (6.4%).
