On September 15, Juliana da Silva Pinto Carneiro, deputy secretary-general of the Executive Secretariat of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, led a 19-member delegation on a visit to the Shanghai Clinical Research and Trial Center (the Center). Zhu Chuwen, director of the Center, and other representatives welcomed the delegation.
Zhu welcomed the delegation and introduced the background, development, and overall layout of the Center. Built on ShanghaiTech University’s institutional and research resources, the center is being developed as a smart research hospital focusing on clinical research and the translation of research into clinical applications, with information and AI capabilities built into its infrastructure.

Dai Jin, teaching associate professor at the School of Life Science and Technology at ShanghaiTech, introduced the university’s longstanding work in quality management and regulatory science, as well as plans for a Center for Biomedical Quality Management and Regulatory Science. The center is envisioned as a platform for collaboration among universities, industry, and regulatory agencies to foster quality management and regulatory research for innovative biomedical products.

Juliana da Silva Pinto Carneiro introduced the members of the delegation. She said the delegation’s visit was intended to learn about China’s advanced digital healthcare technologies and the development of smart hospitals, and to draw on China’s experience in implementing Brazil’s National Smart Services Network. She expressed her hope that the delegation and the Center would continue to exchange ideas and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The two sides discussed the national strategic context behind the Center’s development, its construction and development process, the features of its information systems, and standards for equipment procurement. Both sides expressed interest in further cooperation in relevant areas.

The delegation also toured several areas of the Center, including the outpatient department, pharmacy, hybrid operating room, intensive care unit, and innovation platform for cell and gene therapy technologies.

The visit was the Brazilian delegation’s first stop on a study tour in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
