More than 500 members of the Class of 2030 arrived at ShanghaiTech University from 19 provinces across China on August 24 and 25, marking the beginning of their university journey. With luggage in hand and anticipation for the years ahead, the new students took their first steps into university life at ShanghaiTech.
A warm welcome from university leaders
During orientation, Jiang Mianheng, Chair of the University Governing Board, and Vice Presidents Yin Jie, Zhang Qi and Yu Jingyi visited student residences and orientation sites to meet with new students and their families, as well as to thank staff and volunteers supporting the event.

As new students arrived on August 24, signs at campus entrances helped them find their way, while student residences bustled with students and families carrying luggage and exploring the campus together.
On the morning of August 25, new students completed registration at the Student Activity Center. Registration services were arranged at a series of one-stop counters, allowing students to complete document verification, materials submission and information confirmation in one place.

With streamlined procedures and coordinated support from university offices, students were able to complete the registration process efficiently.
Residential Colleges roll out their own welcome activities
Three residential colleges prepared a variety of activities to welcome the new students and introduce them to their college communities.
At Shangdao College, photo spots were set to capture news students’ first moments on campus. Each new student also received a set of welcome gifts including tote bags, card holders, college T-shirts, postcards featuring messages from faculty mentors and whale-shaped folding fans. The gifts carried elements of the college’s culture and warm wishes for the students as they began their university journey.

At Kedao College, a welcome photo wall and a large display of its “ABCDE” growth model introduced new students and their families to the college’s vision for the four years ahead. Built around five concepts—“Adventure, Bridge, Connection, just Do it, Empower”—the model maps out key milestones and experiences from the first year to graduation, giving new students a clearer picture of what they will experience. Interactive booths featuring different aspects of student development turned the introduction into a series of fun activities. Students could also enjoy specially prepared drinks at the coffee corner and receive welcome packages.

At Dadao College, a photo frame provided a place for students to capture their first memories with Dadao community. A welcome gift package and the Dadao Cooldown Station, offering refreshments and a place to rest, gave students and families a chance to take a break from the summer heat.

Volunteers at the heart of orientation
Student volunteers in red, blue and yellow vests were stationed at campus entrances, registration halls, residential colleges, and residences throughout orientation. They guided students and families, helped carry luggage, answered questions and assisted with registration.

A new chapter has begun for the Class of 2030. As they settle into campus life, we look forward to seeing them explore new ideas, embrace new challenges and make their mark at ShanghaiTech.
