ShanghaiTech University won first prize in the team competition at the 17th China Undergraduate Physics Tournament (CUPT), held at Soochow University in Suzhou from August 12 to 17. Two students majoring in Physics, Hu Chengyue ’29 and Liu Guoxiao ’29, also received awards for their outstanding performance in problem studying.

The tournament was organized in two parallel tracks, the team competition and the works competition. An online competition for the best experimental images was also held. More than 1,000 students and faculty members from 127 universities across China took part in the tournament.
ShanghaiTech’s team consisted of 12 Class of 2029 undergraduate students, including 11 students in Physics and one student in Electronic and Information Engineering. Over five matches held across three days, the team investigated a range of physical phenomena, including the falling, tumbling and drifting motion of a coin in liquid; the stability and dynamic control of levitating objects; the flow and spreading dynamics of oil films and related fluid instabilities; and nonlinear vibrations and energy transfer in magnetic Newton’s cradles. The team demonstrated a strong foundation in physics, a deep understanding of the underlying physical principles, and the ability to communicate scientific ideas clearly and effectively.

ShanghaiTech has qualified for the national round of CUPT eight consecutive times since 2019. The School of Physical Science and Technology has incorporated undergraduate research and innovation activities into its curriculum and student development programs, and actively encourages students to participate in academic competitions and exchanges such as CUPT. Through these activities, students gain hands-on experience in scientific research, strengthen their capacity for innovation, and develop skills in collaboration and academic communication.
