​Running into summer: ShanghaiTech launches inaugural “Lizhi Cup” Campus Run

On the morning of May 23, the ShanghaiTech campus came alive with energy and excitement as the university held its inaugural “Lizhi Cup” Campus Run with a distance of 5.2 kilometers. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and family members gathered on campus to welcome the day with a shared spirit of vitality and perseverance.

In his remarks before the race, President Feng Donglai encouraged the participants in his address, noting that long-distance running is not only a test of speed and physical endurance, but also a reflection of resilience, self-discipline, and determination. “Students, faculty and staff, alumni, and the community should carry the same perseverance into your studies, research, and daily lives, and continue striving toward your goals with confidence and dedication.”

Xie Wenjun, the world champion hurdler, was invited as a distinguished guest to the event. Before the race began, Xie stood on the stage and led all participants through a warm-up and stretching session. The lively interaction and professional demonstrations quickly energized the crowd, filling the campus with enthusiasm and anticipation.

“Ready! Go!” As the starting horn echoed across the morning campus following President Feng’s countdown, runners surged forward and the event officially began. Leaders from ShanghaiTech and its affiliated school, including Cui Yong, Zhang Qi, Gao Lin, and Li Bibo joined participants at the front of the course as runners set off along the campus route, embracing the joy and momentum of the race.

The event featured three categories: individual, parent-child, and team races, attracting broad participation from students, faculty and staff members, alumni, and their families. Along the course, students ran with youthful energy and determination, families shared warm moments side by side, and team participants demonstrated cooperation and camaraderie through every stride. Participants of different ages and backgrounds came together to celebrate the vibrant spirit of campus life.


Medical stations and refreshment points were arranged throughout the course to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all runners. Volunteers remained at their posts throughout the event, offering water, guidance, encouragement, and support, becoming one of the warmest sights along the route.


After a spirited competition, alumnus Yuan Chao finished first in the men’s individual category with a time of 17 minutes and 43 seconds. As runners from each category crossed the finish line one after another, applause and cheers filled the campus. 


For many participants, the event was not only about competition, but also about challenging themselves, enjoying the experience of running, and sharing memorable moments with fellow members of the ShanghaiTech community.

An award ceremony was held at the conclusion of the event, where university leaders presented medals and prizes to outstanding participants in recognition of their performance and sportsmanship.


As a new initiative promoting campus wellness and community engagement, the inaugural “Lizhi Cup” Campus Run brought together students, alumni, faculty, staff, and families through the shared experience of running. The energy, laughter, and determination on display throughout the event created lasting memories on a vibrant early summer day at ShanghaiTech.
