Representatives from the Italian embassy and consulate visited ShanghaiTech University on December 9th, including Professor Plinio Innocenzi, Science and Technology Counsellor at the Italian Embassy of Beijing; Professor Roberto Pagani, Science and Technology Counsellor at Consulate General of Italy in Shanghai; and Dr. Lorenzo Gonzo, Science and Technology Counsellor at the Italian Consulate of Chongqing. ShanghaiTech Vice President Gong Jinkang, Vice Provost and Director of Human Resources Jiang Ge, Vice Director of Shanghai Institute for Advanced Immunochemical Studies Institute (SIAIS) Yang Guang, Research Associate Professor of iHuman Institute Dr. Cheng Jianjun and two Italian Research Associate Professors of SIAIS Dr. Camilla Luni and Dr. Francesco Zonta met with the delegation.

Gong first introduced the university and reviewed the exchanges between ShanghaiTech and Padova University, one of the most prominent universities in Italy and Europe. The Italian delegates appreciated ShanghaiTech’s vision and showed an interest in joint research and start-up incubation. In addition to science, Italian culture is steeped in the arts, architecture, and culture. The two sides may further deepen their cooperation in fashion design.

After the meeting, Italian delegation had a tour of SIAIS and iHuman Institute.

ShanghaiTech and Padova University signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2015 to carry out collaborative programs in research and education. This year, 31 ShanghaiTech students participated in the specially tailored summer session in Italy offered by Padova University, which enabled them to learn about a panorama of Italian culture from Roman times to the present day.
