On March 29th, the ShanghaiTech Career Development Center organized a faculty and student tour of the Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park Exhibition Center, Shanghai Supercomputer Center and GE China R&D Center.

At the Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park Exhibition Center, participants learned the historical development of the park and its contributions. There have been more than 10,000 companies and enterprises in Zhangjiang with 350,000 employees and the gross revenue in 2014 amounting to RMB 500 billion.

Funded by Shanghai Municipal government, the Shanghai Supercomputer Center is the first advanced computing service center to open to the public in China. It opened in 2000 with three supercomputers, including Shuguang 4000A (10th-place ranking in the world in 2004) and Shuguang 5000A (1st-place ranking in Asia and 10th-place ranking worldwide in 2008). The students said they were proud to learn of the science and technology developments in China and gained a better understanding of industry application.

GE China Strategic Innovation & Collaboration Director Zhang Bing made a general introduction to the company structure and achievements and then led faculty and students to the biology, electricity and information labs. Zhang Bing told students that preliminary investigation and experiment design are very important and research fellows of high efficiency should reduce their time in experiment operation to no more than 20% of the total. After the visit, Zhang Bing had a long discussion with faculty and students.

The tour was a critical step to implementing ShanghaiTech’s "going out" strategy. It enables students to learn innovations and technologies that are shaping the future and changing the world and helped them identify industry needs. Conveniently located at the Shanghai Pudong Science and Technology Park of CAS in Zhangjiang InnoPark, ShanghaiTech will further strengthen its cooperation with high-tech institutions in the area to provide students with internships and employment opportunities.
