ShanghaiTech holds Forum of Building an Innovation-driven Pharmaceutical Industry

On February25th, Forum of Building an innovation-driven pharmaceutical industry was held in ShanghaiTech. The forum was co-sponsored by Zhangjiang Biotech and Pharmaceutical Base (ZJBPB), The China Association of Enterprise with Foreign Investment R&D-based Pharmaceutical Association Committee (RDPAC) and The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PHARMA) with the aim to boost innovation in bio-pharmaceutical industry and reinforce government-industry-academia collaboration.

Representatives from transnationals, associations, institutes and departments of local government attended the forum. Prof. Mianheng Jiang, President of ShanghaiTech University and President of CAS Shanghai Branch, Mr. Xiaoming Shen, Party Secretary of Pudong New Area, Mr. Rod Hunter, Senior Vice President of PhRMA and Mr. Joseph Cho, Managing Director of RDPAC were present.

In his opening remarks, Mianheng Jiang stated that the theme of the forum “Enhance the collaboration among government, industry and academic in pharmaceutical R&D and innovation” was in line with the vision of the university. ShanghaiTech attached great importance on carrying out concrete cooperation with domestic and overseas bio-medical companies. Till now, Amgen, one of the largest biopharmaceutical companies in the world, has opened its very first R&D lab in ShanghaiTech to forge an antibody drug alliance. Meanwhile, iHuman Institute of ShanghaiTech has taken the lead in building GPCR industry integration. Jiang stressed that the ecosystem combining industry, education and research could only be achieved by self-innovation. ShanghaiTech would set up a platform opened to more international collaborations to boost collaborative innovation, thus contributing to the restructuring and development of China.

Mr. Robert J. Hugin, President of PhRMA, Prof. Ye Yang, Deputy Director of Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, CAS, Prof. Richard A. Lerner, Founding Director of Shanghai Institute for Advanced Immunochemical Studies (SIAIS), ShanghaiTech, Mr. Lanzhong Wang, Manager of ZJBPB delivered speeches.

Prof. Jiarui Wu, Executive Dean of School of Life Science and Technology and Prof. Biao Jiang, Executive Deputy Director of SIAIS, participated in the panel discussion on building productive government-industry-academia partnership.

The forum offers all parties in bio-pharmaceutical industry a good channel to communicate and is supposed to help accelerate innovation and industrialization in biomedicine.
