President Jiang Meets US Secretary of Energy Ernest Jeffrey Moniz

On March 18th, ShanghaiTech President Jiang Mianheng met with US Secretary of Energy Ernest Jeffrey Moniz in Shanghai. The two sides reviewed the cooperation in Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR) and renewable energy between Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and United States Department of Energy, discussed the university’s partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and exchanged ideas about scientific discovery and faculty building with regard to the recently detected gravitational wave.Secretary Moniz showed great interest in the vision and goals of ShanghaiTech University and explored further collaboration with CAS and ShanghaiTech. CAS Shanghai Branch President Zhu Zhiyuan and CAS Shanghai Advanced Research Institute Vice President Sun Yuhan attended the meeting.


Ernest Jeffrey Moniz has served as the United States Secretary of Energy under U.S. President Barack Obama since May 2013. From 1995 to 1997, he served as the Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President of the United States and from 1997 to 2001 he served in the United States Department of Energy, serving as Under Secretary of Energy during the Clinton Administration. Secretary Moniz has also served at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems, as the Director of the Energy Initiative, and as the Director of the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment.
