The 1st International Tutorial Series of Scientific Advances has been successfully held by ShanghaiTech University

Recently, ShanghaiTech University successfully held the 1st International Tutorial Series of Scientific Advances in China Executive Leadership Academy, Pudong Shanghai. The tutorial invited 33 young scientists from 20 world-class universities like Harvard, MIT, Yale and Johns Hopkins for the purpose of boosting knowledge spillover and attracting young talents. Through this platform, ShanghaiTech introduced young talents to its vision, mission, strategic plan, and preparation progress.

Yicui Yin, Shanghai Municipal Deputy Secretary as well as Vice President of China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong Shanghai, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. She introduced the current economic and social development of Shanghai, and the strategic vision of Innovation impetus and transformation development. Meanwhile, she emphasized the significance of the joint efforts made by Shanghai government and Chinese Academy of Sciences to the establishment of ShanhaiTech, and the willingness to attract more young talents working in Shanghai.

Mianheng Jiang, President of Shanghai Branch of CAS and Chairman of ShanghaiTech Steering Committee , gave a keynote address at the tutorial. After analyzing the major global science and technology trends, and current challenges facing China, he pointed out the responsibility and mission of Chinese scientists under the goal of developing an innovation-driven economy. He also encouraged young scientists to grasp the opportunities of this era, to shoulder the historical responsibility, to immerse themselves into the research and education undertakings of ShanghaiTech, and to make due contributions to the development of our country and the amelioration of livelihood.

The 3-day tutorial consisted of three sessions - Plenary Presentation, Scientific Presentation and Perspectives, and Organized Sightseeing. Xian-en Zhang (Director-General of Department of Basic Research of Ministry of Science and Technology of China), and Hongyang Wang (Director of Department of Health Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China) gave presentations on national funding. Jie Yin (Deputy Director of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission), Zhiyuan Zhu (Executive Vice President of Shanghai Branch of CAS), Songlin Feng (President of the Preparation Committee of Shanghai Advanced Research Institute), Jiarui Wu (Vice President of Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, CAS) and Lin Li (Vice President of Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, CAS) respectively introduced the preparation progress of ShanghaiTech, the outline of CAS Shanghai Branch and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, the preparation progress of School of Life Science and Technology of ShanghaiTech, as well as the profile of Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences. Raymond Stevens from the Scripps Research Institute, who has also been recruited by Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica under the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, gave a presentation titled “Shanghai as the Global Center for GPCR Research” and shared his story of working and living in Shanghai. In the end, Academician Zihe Rao summarized this tutorial and interacted actively with young scientists. Besides the scholars and leaders mentioned above, many other leading scholars in life sciences from CAS and internationally renowned scientists who are concerned about the preparation of ShanghaiTech, also attended this tutorial.

Discussion and sharing


The session of Scientific Presentation and Perspectives was a great opportunity for all the participants to discuss and share their academic work. Young scientists were taken to visit the campus of ShanghaiTech which is still under construction, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute campus, Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica campus and Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
