Vision:

ShanghaiTech adopts a student-centered educational approach to nurture well-rounded future leading scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs who possess in-depth professional knowledge and soft skills.

Structure:

ShanghaiTech University operates on a trimester system, with a fall/winter, spring and summer semester. Students are required to take 11 fundamental science courses, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and engineering and a wide range of liberal arts courses. All courses are taught in Chinese and English with English language textbooks. Students have the option to minor in Finance or Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

Summer Social Engagement and Industry Engagement Programs bring ShanghaiTech students out of the lab and into the real world to engage with society. The summer trips around China help ShanghaiTech prepare students for their post-university life and also give them a chance to engage with and do service work for communities around China.

ShanghaiTech students also have the opportunity to study abroad during the summer at four universities in the US and Italy and more than half of the undergraduate student body chooses to do so during their academic career. In 2017, more than 90 students took part in three-week long study abroad programs and 24 students were selected for semester/year study abroad programs at Harvard, MIT, and UC Berkeley.
