Officially approved to open on September 30th 2013 by China’s Ministry of Education, ShanghaiTech University is a small-scale research university of academic excellence jointly established by Shanghai Municipal Government and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

 

Mission 
ShanghaiTech is committed to serving the national development strategy. The University seeks innovative solutions to address the challenges that China is facing in the field of energy, material, environment, human health, thus to improve productivity driven by innovation, and contribute to the restructuring and development of China.

 

Location 
Conveniently located in Shanghai Pudong Science and Technology Park of CAS in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, ShanghaiTech is in the vicinity of several national research institutes and large scientific facilities, such as CAS Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, National Center for Protein Science ● Shanghai, New Drug Research Platform of Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites, Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, and close to industries and venture funds within the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.

 

Campus
The campus covers approximately 0.6 square kilometer. The total floor area of the approved projects is over 700,000 square meters. Based on the concept of “faculty and student oriented” and “interaction and integration”, the design of the campus won the 2012 American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC) Awards for Urban Design. The infrastructure projects have been completed and is gradually being put into use.

 

Schools
ShanghaiTech focuses on science and engineering. The university consists of four schools and two research institutes: School of Physical Science and Technology (SPST), School of Information Science and Technology (SIST), School of Life Science and Technology (SLST), School of Entrepreneurship and Management (SEM), Shanghai Institute for Advanced Immunochemical Studies (SIAIS) and iHuman Institute.

 

Faculty
ShanghaiTech is building up a strong faculty of 1000 professors, including 500 tenure-track/tenured professors recruited from around the world and 500 distinguished professors-in-residence from CAS institutes and other prestigious universities or institutes. Among our current faculty (422 by April 2017) are three Nobel laureates, six National Academy of Sciences (USA) members, two Royal Society (UK) fellow, twenty-six CAS members and three Chinese Academy of Engineering members.

 

Students
ShanghaiTech offers Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, Doctoral degree and Professional Master Degree. The undergraduate students will reach 2,000 and graduate students will reach 4,000 (including 3,000 Ph.D. candidates). The first cohort of 296 graduate students was admitted in September 2013, followed by 425 graduate students in 2014, 385 graduate students in 2015 and 423 graduate students in 2016. The first cohort of 207 undergraduate students from 9 provinces of China were enrolled in 2014. In 2016, 355 undergraduate students were accepted for enrollment.

 

Education
ShanghaiTech aims to nurture future leading scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs. At ShanghaiTech, residential colleges work closely with schools to foster students’ moral integrity, academic capabilities and innovative spirit. Students are encouraged to investigate the challenges China faces, to explore cutting-edge research areas and high-tech industries, and to put their innovative and entrepreneurial ideas into action.

 

Undergraduate Program

All students are required to take 11 Fundamental Science Courses, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and engineering, and a wide range of Liberal Arts Courses, taught in both Chinese and English with original English Language textbooks in accordance with international standards.

In 2016, fourteen teams of students from Class of 2019 joined in Social Engagement Programs in eight provinces/autonomous regions around China. The projects include cultural tradition, environment and energy, urbanization, technological innovation, and educational development. Class of 2018 students participated in a two-week industry project approaching more than 70 companies and start-ups, which enabled them to better understand social needs and get a clearer picture of their own potential.

 

Graduate Program

Graduate students are expected to be highly skilled at independent and innovative research, found start-up companies or work in technical and management positions in high-tech industries. 70-80% of ShanghaiTech graduate students come from 38 top universities in China. In 2016, all of the first graduating class of the Master’s degree have found employment or are continuing their studies in China or abroad.

 

Research
Research is centered on frontiers of physical science and technology, life science and technology and information science and technology, conducted by both individual professors and research teams. By encouraging interdisciplinary approach and the integration of university and national research facilities, the university aims to form a complete innovation value chain which is to drive the industrial development by advancement of science, and is committed to finding innovative resolutions to address the challenges during the transformation of China. 

By the September of 2016, ShanghaiTech University had 124 research teams. Faculty members and research fellows published 439 papers, 197 of which list ShanghaiTech as first academic affiliation. Major research findings have been made, including “Resolution of human marijuana receptor’s 3D structure” (selected as one of the Ten Hot Events of Science and Technology in Shanghai in 2016).

 

With an interdisciplinary approach and the integration of university and national research facilities, the university aims to form a complete innovation value chain, which will drive industrial development through scientific advances. It is playing a very important role in the Free Electron Laser Facility, the Live Cell Imagining Facility and the Ultra-Intense and Ultrashort Pulse Laser Facility initiated by the Zhangjiang National Science Center.

 

Collaboration
ShanghaiTech is actively engaged in the globalization of education and has extensive collaboration with UC Berkeley, University of Chicago, MIT, Padova University etc. in the field of training of faculty, course sharing, joint degrees, student exchange, academic exchange and joint research. The university is also working to partner with other top Chinese universities. To break down the barrier between research and industry, ShanghaiTech collaborates closely with domestic and international high-tech companies such as Amgen (the largest independent biotechnology firm in the world) and Broadcom (a global leader and innovator in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications) in joint research and development and student training.

 

In 2016, 85 students participated in summer programs their summer programs at University of California-Berkeley, University of Chicago and Padova University. ShanghaiTech also welcomed students from University of Chicago and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to do summer research or workshops. 

The 3+1 Study Abroad Program provides students with opportunities to study for up to one academic year in partner universities. In 2016, 3 students participated in the program with MIT and in 2017 another 3 students will spend one semester at Harvard University.
