The university welcomed the 540 freshmen of the Class of 2029 from 19 provinces across China at the end of August. Carrying dreams and aspirations, these students began a new chapter at ShanghaiTech University, bringing youthful energy and joy to the campus.

The university leadership gave a warm welcome to the new students. Chair of the University Governing Board Jiang Mianheng, along with other university leaders including Zhu Zhiyuan, Cui Yong, and Wu Qiang, visited the welcome stations at three colleges and the Student Center. They inquired in detail about the freshmen’s registration progress, warmly greeted the freshmen and their parents, engaged in friendly conversations with them, while also expressing gratitude to the staff and volunteers working for the new students orientation. They emphasized the importance of providing excellent service to ensure that new students feel the warmth of a home.

Efficient one-stop registration service

To streamline the registration process and maximize efficiency, the various university departments were seamlessly coordinated. The registration location was on the first floor of the Student Center, where freshmen orderly and efficiently completed steps such as identity verification, student ID issuance, household registration transfer, and photo collection.

College activities foster connection

The three colleges—Shangdao College, Kedao College, and Dadao College—organized a variety of engaging welcome activities to help new students quickly feel at home in the ShanghaiTech community.

At the college welcome stations, creative cultural products, interactive games, and freshman exploration activities drew enthusiastic participation, bringing students closer together and fostering a sense of belonging.

Volunteers light up the campus 

During the two-day orientation, upperclass students wearing red, blue, and yellow volunteer vests became a vibrant presence on campus. They could be seen across the university, guiding freshmen, answering questions, and offering assistance. Their enthusiasm and warm smiles brought comfort and support to every new student.

Orientation lecturepreparing students for university life

On the afternoon of August 29, Executive Vice President and Provost Yin Jie delivered the first orientation lecture to the Class of 2029. He introduced the university’s undergraduate education goals and distinctive features, encouraging students to actively engage and pursue well-rounded development. The Office of Undergraduate Programs also provided an overview of the undergraduate curriculum.
