University of Waterloo President Visits ShanghaiTech

On November 28 2019, a delegation led by University of Waterloo President Hamdullahpur visited ShanghaiTech and met with President Jiang Mianheng. Other delegates from University of Waterloo included Ian Rowlands, Associate Vice-President, International; Troy Glover, Professor and Chair, Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences; Zhongchao Tan, Associate Dean International, Faculty of Engineering; Stephen Watt, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Suping Zhao, International Relations Manager and Special Advisor-China, Waterloo. 

During the meeting with the delegation, President Jiang affirmed that one of ShanghaiTech’s key visions is internationalization and said that he would like to learn from the experiences of top universities all over the world, including University of Waterloo, a unique university enjoying worldwide reputation. When asked about the challenges in current international relations, President Hamdullahpur said he believed in the Sino-Canadian friendship and university cooperation. Vice Provost Jiang Ge also attended the meeting. 

The delegation visited the School of Life Science and Technology, where Vice Dean Liu Jilong led them on a tour of labs and the EM Center. Vice Dean Liu Zhi introduced the School of Physical Science and Technology and the SHINE project, then led a tour to the topological lab. The delegation was impressed by the MARS lab led by Professor Yu Jingyi, Executive Dean of School of Information Science and Technology. Their last stop was art exhibitions at the School of Creativity and Art, where the new Vice Dean Wang Shouzhi proudly showed the visitors around.
