UC President Visits ShanghaiTech

On May 18th 2017, University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer and Vice Provost Balaji Srinivasan visited ShanghaiTech and met with President Jiang Mianheng. President Jiang reflected on their meetings in the past, and warmly welcomed President Zimmer to the new campus of ShanghaiTech for the first time. Vice President Gong Jinkang then introduced ShanghaiTech and summarized the student program cooperation with University of Chicago. President Zimmer pointed out that University of Chicago has extensive engagement in China and that the existing cooperation between ShanghaiTech and University of Chicago is going well. He anticipated a much richer and broader cooperation in the future. Their discussion focused on potential cooperations in economics and energy, and they also talked about how to expand the current student programs and develop faculty exchanges and joint research.


Other participants in the meeting included Vice President and Provost Yin Jie, Associate Dean of SPST Liu Zhi, SEM Dean May Lee, Assistant Professor Li Zhi, Assistant Professor and UC alum Zhou Haotian, and Associate Professor Lyu Pengfei and Assistant Professor Ning Zhijun, who both hosted UChicago visiting students in the past. Dr. Zhu Min, Former IMF Deputy Managing Chair and now President of Tsinghua University’s Institute of National Financial Research was invited to attend the meeting as a special guest of ShanghaiTech.


ShanghaiTech cooperates with UC’s Institute of Molecular Engineering on a 3+1 Study Abroad Program and has been sending students to the summer program since 2015. In return, the University of Chicago has been sending undergraduate students to ShanghaiTech for summer research for three consecutive years now.
