Liftoff occurred at 9:41 a.m. on September 25, 2015. The ShanghaiTech-II Satellite, made by Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites (SECM), together with Pujiang River-I Satellite and two other satellites separated from the Long March 11 carrier rocket after launch. University Council Vice Chairman and ShanghaiTech Vice President Lu Xionggang, and three graduate students from the School of Physical Science and Technology (SPST), School of Life Science and Technology (SLST) and School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) witnessed the thrilling moment at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. ShanghaiTech will make use of the data collected by these satellites for academic research.
The successful launch of the ShanghaiTech-II Satellite symbolizes the integration of education and research between the university and SECM. Twelve research fellows from SECM including Director Xiang Libin serve as distinguished adjunct professors of SIST. Students have opportunities to attend lectures and workshops on the development of national aeronautics and space undertakings and to participate in contests on microsatellite technology. Wu Shufan, Chief Designer of the ShanghaiTech-II Satellite will be invited to share with students the stories behind the launch this semester.
