On September 23rd, ShanghaiTech President Jiang Mianheng, University Council Chairman Zhu Zhiyuan, and Head of SPST Division of Photon Science and Condensed Matter Physics Liu Zhi visited Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Richard K. Miller, President of Olin College welcomed the ShanghaiTech delegation.
After listening to a briefing by Electrical and Computer Engineering Program Professor Oscar Mur-Miranda about Olin’s curriculum design, admissions program and educational model, the delegation took a tour of Olin’s campus and labs and met with President Miller. The two presidents had an in-depth discussion about education and training in engineering sciences, curriculum development and how to apply knowledge to real-life challenges. Both parties agreed to collaborate in student and research exchange.
The Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering (also known as Olin College or simply Olin) is a private undergraduate engineering college located in Needham, Massachusetts. Olin College is noted in the engineering community for its youth, small size, project-based curriculum, and large endowment funded primarily by the F. W. Olin Foundation. The College currently awards the half-tuition Olin Scholarship to each admitted student.
Olin's degree programs in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Engineering received accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) on August 31, 2007.
Olin admitted its first full class of 75 students in 2002. After admitting three more classes, the college reached its full size of approximately 300 in fall 2005, and currently has an average of 350 students each year. The quality of its students and education programs is partly ensured by its low admission rate (9.6% in 2012) and small student-body size.
